The J. Frank White Academy has begun fundraising for an organic garden project with an initial bake sale held in the student lounge during the school day.

When asked how the project began, Academy junior Olivia Robertson explained “The idea of this project started because of the 2016 World School Forum theme (food and culture).” She went on to mention “During World School this year, we discussed what we could do at home to change the way our community eats and thinks. We decided an organic garden for our school would be a great way to teach kids what they are eating and how it affects them.”

“Our intentions are to start the foundation of this project for the students,” commented Robertson. “We would like to raise enough money to build a greenhouse and beehive for the students to manage.”

Additional fundraising projects will be hosted at later dates, as forecasted participation from the student body is expected to remain strongly enthused with the cause and the increase in variety resulting from efforts to fund the garden.

The items sold during the bake sale included hazelnut balls, brownies, red velvet cookies, double chocolate cookies, sugar cookies, caramel puff corn, and Mr. Greene’s from scratch biscuits. All items were sold for $1.00 to make sure students would buy them.
